How Water Impacts

Overall Wellness

Your wellness journey can start in many different areas, as so many factors impact our health. One of the most important is water. Here, you'll learn why using a water filter is essential and how our water becomes contaminated in the first place. I’ll also share some of the products I personally use, along with a few others I've researched that are great for your health and come in a range of budgets depending on your health goals.

The Importance of High-Quality Water Filters

  • #1

High-quality water filters are essential for ensuring access to clean, safe drinking water

  • #2

They effectively remove harmful contaminants such as bacteria, heavy metals, chlorine, and pesticides, which can pose serious health risks.

  • #3

In addition to improving taste and odor, water filters help prevent long-term health issues like gastrointestinal problems and exposure to toxins

  • #4

Using a water filter not only supports your health but also reduces the need for bottled water, which helps protect the ecosystem and wildlife.

How Water Becomes Contaminated & Stripped of Minerals

Industrial Pollution

Factories release harmful toxins, chemicals, and heavy metals like lead, mercury, and pharmaceuticals into nearby rivers, lakes, and groundwater, polluting our water supply.

Natural Contaminants

Some natural water sources contain harmful elements such as arsenic, radon, and fluoride, which can be dangerous to health.

Improper Water Disposal

When businesses or organizations improperly dispose of chemicals and waste, these dangerous substances can soak into the ground and contaminate nearby water sources.

Water Treatment Issues:

Public water systems often use chemicals like chlorine to disinfect water, but this process can create byproducts known as THMs. While considered safe in small amounts, long-term exposure to these chemicals has been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and liver and kidney damage.

Sewage & Wastewater:

Outdated or poorly maintained sewage systems can lead to leaks, allowing bacteria and harmful substances to spread into the water supply, causing health risks

Natural Disasters

Floods, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events can carry harmful particles into water systems, contaminating water sources

Lead Pipes:

In older homes or infrastructure with outdated plumbing, acidic or stagnant water can cause lead to leach into the water supply. This is especially harmful to children and can cause serious health problems.

Agricultural Runoff

Pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals used in farming and landscaping can wash into water supplies after rainfall or irrigation, polluting both surface and underground water.

How This Impacts Our Health

Long-Term Exposure to Arsenic, Radon, and Other Contaminants in Water

Arsenic & Radon:

  • Cancer: Arsenic is linked to skin, bladder, lung, and kidney cancers; radon can cause lung cancer and, when evaporated from water (e.g., in showers), can be inhaled.

  • Cardiovascular Problems: Arsenic damages blood vessels.

  • Neurological Effects: Long-term exposure to arsenic may lead to memory loss and cognitive impairments.

  • Skin Issues: Arsenic can cause dark spots and lesions.

  • Diabetes: Increased risk of Type 2 diabetes linked to arsenic exposure.

Excess Fluoride in Water:

  • Dental Issues: Causes white spots or streaks during childhood tooth development.

  • Bone & Joint Problems: Can lead to pain, stiffness, or even bone deformities.

  • Thyroid Issues: May cause hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and other dysfunctions.

  • Cognitive Issues: Excessive fluoride exposure can lower IQ in children.

Other Contaminants in Water:

  • Benzene: Found in plastics and synthetic fibers, can lead to leukemia and other cancers.

  • PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls): Used in electrical equipment and paints, still contaminates water, causing liver damage and developmental issues.

  • Heavy Metals (Lead, Mercury): Can cause kidney problems, neurological damage, and developmental delays in children.

  • Pharmaceutical & Personal Care Products: Chemicals from drugs, cosmetics, and cleaning products can disrupt hormones and impact antibiotic resistance, while harming aquatic ecosystems.
